“BUILDING SWALLOW NESTS WITH THE STUDENTS OF THE 3rd GYMNASIUM OF PREVEZA

Students and teachers from the 3rd Gymnasium of Preveza visited the Environmental Interpretation and Interactive Digital Information Center of the Achelous Valley and Amvrakikos Gulf Protected Areas Management Unit on Friday morning, April 4.

The students were informed by the Unit’s staff about the biodiversity of the Amvrakikos Wetlands National Park, had the opportunity to observe various species of birds using a telescope, and were made aware of the need to protect it.

With the valuable help and guidance of Ms. Pela Kalogirou, Artist/Ceramist and Wildlife Rescuer, a group of students made clay swallow nests, replacing the soil that swallows now find difficult to find in cities. The nests will be placed at school or at home, providing ready-made homes for the swallows.”

For me, It was a beautiful day!!!

We did our best with the children to make sure our little migrants found shelter and, even better, to attract them to our homes.

We built swallow nests and discussed the obstacles that migratory birds face on their long journey. Droughts, water shortages, war, destroyed and polluted habitats. We also discussed the obstacles they face when they reach their breeding grounds, with the over-paving of land in urban centers and, unfortunately, elsewhere, where they are unable to find soil to dig and build their nests, but also the terrible burden of herbicides that dramatically reduce their food supply.

We have built quite a few swallow nests!

All of them are special and unique. The sustainable ones have been selected and will be installed immediately!

Many thanks to Stratos Floudas and all the employees of the Organization. Amvrakikos Wetlands National Park

Their contribution over the years to biodiversity conservation and awareness-raising is invaluable and priceless for the highly sensitive ecosystem that surrounds us.
